Slowing down and reflection of waves in truncated periodic media

We consider wave propagation and scattering governed by one dimensional Schrödinger operators with truncated periodic potentials. The propagation of wave packets with narrow frequency supports is studied. The goal is to describe potentials for which the group velocity (for periodic problem) is small and the transmission coefficient for the truncated potential is not too small, i.e. to find medi...

Slowing and stopping of chemical waves in a narrowing canal

The propagation of a chemical wave in a narrow cone-shaped glass capillary was investigated. When a chemical wave propagats from the wider end to the narrower end, it slows, stops, and then disappears. A phenomenological model that considers the surface effect of the glass is proposed, and this model reproduces the experimental trends.

Cosmic sound waves rule

© 2008 American Institute of Physics, S-0031-9228-0804-010-6 Relativistic sound waves raced through the hot plasma that filled the universe for its first 380 000 years. That sound left an imprint that is still discernible in the cosmic microwave background and also in the large-scale distribution of galaxies. Measurements of the sound waves manifested in the CMB, coupled with a detailed underst...

Dust-Acoustic Waves: Visible Sound Waves

A historical overview of some of the early theoretical and experimental work on dust acoustic waves is given. The basic physics of the dust acoustic wave and some of the theoretical refinements that have been made, including the effects of collisions, plasma absorption, dust charge fluctuations, particle drifts and strong coupling effects are discussed. Some recent experimental findings and out...

Slowing of vortex rings by development of Kelvin waves.

We study experimentally the slowing of viscous vortex rings. In particular we do so using the concept of drag coefficient, which is a bulk coefficient which aims to capture the various mechanisms of slowing that can occur. At early times of flight the ring slows at a certain rate. After some time, instabilities (which we refer to as Kelvin waves) begin to form on the ring and there is a transie...
